Information on past disasters is crucial for disaster prediction, planning, and implementation of mitigation against such disasters in the future. Geographic Information System (GIS) software is a convenient tool for managing a database of disaster information as well as for preparing potential hazard maps. The GIS-based District-wide Disaster Information System developed within the Department of Water-induced Disaster Prevention (DWIDP) is intended to present the graphical display of past water-induced disasters in Nepal and the analysis of the causative factors of such disasters in the future. The Disaster Mitigation Support Program Project within the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention implemented GIS for disaster information management as follows:

  • District-wide Disaster Information System with information on annual disaster causes in all 75 districts of Nepal.
  • Mapping of the Kathmandu-Naubise Road, which is the only major road linking Kathmandu Valley with the rest of the country and India.
